Abstract Body: There is nearly no issue in dentistry on which more myths and, in parts contradictory, recommendations exists than on oral hygiene. Several aspects are still under debate such as ‘what type of brush should be used’, ‘what is the best brushing technique’ or ‘should we recommend interdental hygiene’? In the daily dental practice we observe that most of our patients are motivated and eager to perform proper oral hygiene, however, often with limited success. Therefore, several questions in this context arise such as ‘what do we really know about the patients’ brushing performance?’ and ‘what should be recommend if the own strategy does not work?’ The lecture should give, by means of video-taped oral hygiene performance of volunteers, insights into the reasons for a missing or limited success of oral hygiene endeavors and it should also motivate to think about the own strategies and recommendations.
